Yep, it’s official. I believe breasts are overrated.

Carol Wyllie, Author of Chemo Pissed Me Off

Breasts are overrated.
But are they? I’m not sure. Bear with me while I work through this. I’d like to see a world where flat-chested women are celebrated instead of invisible. But that’s a discussion for another day.
Personally speaking, my breasts might be overrated. Yes, they fed my children. Well, technically
they fed one of my children. The youngest experienced my breast infection, antibiotic tasting
milk and intolerance for breast milk in general. She may agree that my breasts were overrated
back then. At 41, diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) and opting for a double mastectomy I
would concur: overrated. At 49, when they discovered some breast tissue left behind in my axilla that had gone from DCIS to IDC (invasive ductal carcinoma) stage 1/grade 3 and required all the toxic treatments,
no doubt: overrated. At 52, when I needed to calm my immune system down and remove my implants and undergo a 14-hour diep flap surgery to make live tissue breasts, hell yes: overrated. Especially since one of those flaps died and required a second, emergency surgery to remove. Now I have one natural tissue breast and one concaved …area where a breast is supposed to be. It’s not a good look. Thankfully, Billie Eilish has made the extreme baggy shirt look a fashion statement. Oh, and it’s not swimsuit season—yet. Yep, it’s official. I believe breasts are overrated. Cancer can no doubt throw some curve balls of suck. It’s what we do with the suck that counts. Finding our silver linings during the suck is when the magic happens.

Carol Wyllie, having read Chemo Pissed Me Off and now this post, I’ve got to say you never cease to amaze and inspire. “Finding our silver linings during the suck is when the magic happens” is such a profound reminder. Thank you for not hiding, but instead using your journey to help the rest of us find our way.
